Stahl, a professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, expressed concern about the negative impact of erectile dysfunction medication on the men’s lives.
“The effects of Viagra and Levitra on male erectile function are already in the literature,” he said. “It would be nice if we could show that this was an effective treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction who have undergone surgical procedures.”
A study of 2,300 men with mild or moderate erectile dysfunction (ED) found that the use of these drugs had no effect on the men’s erections in either the normal or impaired state. The researchers noted that in the normal state, men who take Viagra or Levitra are able to achieve an erection at the time of intercourse, regardless of the degree of ED. In the men who did not have ED, however, the use of these drugs did have a slight negative impact. “This was probably the most important finding,” said Stahl, a professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. “The effect of these drugs was more pronounced in men who had severe ED.”
The researchers said that this is an important finding because men with mild ED have a lower ability to achieve an erection when they are sexually stimulated. This is because men with ED may have erectile dysfunction, and they can experience side effects from the drugs themselves, Stahl said. “Erectile dysfunction can be treated with medications that will lower blood pressure and allow blood to flow to the penis,” he said. “The use of these drugs may not be appropriate for patients with diabetes.”
Stahl said that there have been several studies of men with ED who took Viagra or Levitra and who used them for a while. He said that men with ED are likely to have a lower threshold for sexual arousal and arousal, such as those who are more sensitive to stimulation and are more likely to have difficulty achieving an erection. In another study of men with erectile dysfunction, men with ED were allowed to use a medication called sildenafil citrate (Viagra), which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. “We found that, compared with men who were not sexually aroused, men who used sildenafil citrate did not experience any significant difference in their ability to achieve an erection,” said Dr. David Heiman, a professor of urology at Emory University School of Medicine.
In the study, men taking sildenafil citrate were able to achieve a hard, erect penis in one-fifth of men. Those who did not use sildenafil citrate experienced a 50% reduction in the number of erections, and those who used sildenafil citrate achieved an erection in 75% of the men. The results of the study also showed that men who were not sexually aroused were also able to achieve an erection. He said that the medication used to treat ED was not designed for men who are not sexually aroused.
